Christopher Mirto is a theater and opera director whose work spans classical repertoire and new works across North America and Europe. Known for productions that illuminate the psychological and political dimensions of canonical texts, his directing invites audiences into intimate encounters with stories that span centuries.
Mirto’s operatic work includes productions of Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, and Britten for companies including the Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, and Glyndebourne. In the theater, his productions of Shakespeare, Chekhov, and contemporary playwrights have been presented at the Guthrie Theater, Arena Stage, the Donmar Warehouse, and regional theaters across the United States.
He approaches each production with a commitment to rigorous dramaturgical research and a deep collaboration with designers and performers. His work is characterized by a clarity of visual language, an attentiveness to the music’s architecture in opera, and an abiding interest in what classical texts have to say about contemporary life.
Mirto holds a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from Yale School of Drama and has taught at the Juilliard School, Yale School of Drama, and the American Conservatory Theater. He is a recipient of the Drama Desk Award, the Lucille Lortel Award, and the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award.
